My experience at the Richmond Youth Arts Project has made me learn quite a lot about the unique public art installations can be created. The way that this program was carried out very interesting; however, due to COVID-19 our lessons were quite restricted. The process involved many online classes and a few meet-ups in person. We worked around nature and plant lives as the subject of our artworks.
We had several sketchbook assignments that really forced us to get comfortable drawing plant life. We explored many creative concepts throughout our meet-ups such as depicting natural audio as art, naming smells, and other strange but creative exercises.
We also spent much time foraging the forests and parks that we met up in. We collected numerous samples of plant life for our projects and we sketched them as well. One of our main assignments were our herbariums, made up of pressed plants and cyanotypes and other depictions of our plants.
One of the cooler things I learned about was cyanotypes, a method used to “photograph” our plants with UV lighting and water. It was interesting to learn how to carefully handle the UV paper in the sunlight so I could get a clear image on the paper. The herbarium was one of the most rewarding assignments as it was very time consuming to glue draw and decorate the plants and the pages.
Our final project for our actual public art installation was a simple panorama picture of nature. It was by far one of the easiest parts of the program and the whole process of getting to there felt a little overwhelming for such a simple product.
Overall the program was pretty casual and not too intense, and ultimately rewarding to finish. It is one of my highlights of the summer. Despite the ongoing COVID pandemic it really is nice to have such an experience to do something as interesting to entertain me during the quarantine. The fact that I got to meet new people during a time where going outside is quite rare. I would recommend this type of program for anyone who enjoys art as it has many aspects to it and can teach you about things you have never learned before. I would happily do this over again as the whole program was stress-free and just a good escape from the stressful pandemic.
Byron
