To Capture

The beautiful journey has just begun——The Story Behind Ann's Solo Exhibition

Bright and bold colors manifest the gorgeousness of youth; novel and original ideas break cultural barriers; delicate and vivid strokes reveal a keen mind, and sincere and passionate dreams touch those who are longing for dreams...From February 16 to February 19, 2024, Shenya Yan (Ann) would hold her first personal professional painting exhibition in Vancouver. As the original artist of this exhibition, Ann exhibited a total of 10 selected works. The theme of the exhibition is "CHROMA RADIANCE", embracing vibrant and highly saturated colors.

Ann boldly experiments with various mixed media, including acrylic, watercolor, collage, digital art, and yarn, creating a collection of works that are full of vitality and imagination. These works come in various styles and focus on themes to capture the vitality of youth and the passion for life from a lively, unique, and profound perspective.Full of youth, quick thinking, warm and enthusiastic, cutting-edge, and active, this is the first impression Ann gives people. What is unique is that this young 18-year-old girl has successfully held a personal exhibition in Vancouver. Her work also won the Honorable Mention Award in the International Portrait Online Art Contest (2024 The Fourth Portrait Online Art Contest by Gray Cube Gallery - The Honorable Mention Award) and was finalisted for the 2024 Artist's Choice Online Exhibition organized by the Federation of Canadian Artists. For a young girl who is just starting out, this is a very impressive result.

1.Starting from a happy soul, capture the beauty of world with a paint brush

Born in Shanghai and lived in a happy educational family, Ann’s parents supported and encouraged her to try different art categories, while giving her full freedom to experience and choose her own hobbies. They often take her to visit museums, attend concerts, participate in art exhibitions and other cultural activities, which broadened her horizons at a young age. She had a wide range of interests, but she eventually discovered that painting was the closest expression to her heart. She often picks up a paintbrush and immerses herself in her own little world, using colors and outlines to depict beauty in her eyes, and enjoys herself in the world of creation. Her parents have always supported their daughter's hobbies with actions and hired professional teachers for her to learn painting. When her family moved to Vancouver, her passion for learning painting never stopped. She said: "Love means perseverance", and Ann kept moving forward on the road of learning painting.

2. Thinking deep, from doodling to contemplating

After moving to Vancouver, Ann and her family experienced the initial “cultural shock”, overcoming language barriers, and the challenges of integrating into a new community. For Ann, her hobby of painting has not diminished, but has given her the opportunity to experience another perspective of life. During her middle school years, Ann transitioned from a child to a teenager and faced the dual challenges of adapting to the new environment and growing up.The process of painting made her calm down and gave her an opportunity to talk to herself.

She said that during painting, she gradually shifted from the child-like painting based on intuition to in-depth exploration and thinking, and active creative painting. She discovered that the art of painting can break through the limitations of language, culture, and ethnicity, and express her heart and thoughts in a more intuitive and deep way, giving her unlimited potential and freedom. Whenever she is immersed in artistic creation, she naturally enters a state of "flow" and experiences pure tranquility and joy, letting her mind wander in the world of art and exploring the true meaning of life and art. Ann also served as the captain of the school art club in middle school, using her skills to lead the club to serve the community.Just as beautiful paintings are often composed of a variety of colors, Ann's favorite art forms are also rich and diverse.

She likes pure artistic two-dimensional paintings, thinking about the philosophy of life while perfecting the details of her work. When making three-dimensional sculptures (Sculpture), she will think more critically, repeatedly questioning and thinking about the essence of things, to pursue excellence in her artwork.

3. Be sincere and original – chasing dream in a fast-changing chaotic world

As a girl who grew up in an era where everything is changing so fast and complicatedly, Ann has a deep understanding of the different cultures of the East and the West. However, in the era of explosive information, the endless choices people get can also be confusing. For her, one of the most precious qualities is to maintain the original self. Painting is the origin of her passion in life, which gives rise to a wonderful and rich little universe. For example, she studied music because she needed to understand music to dub animation works; she also taught herself programming, because many animation designs require programming-related knowledge; she even studied tarot cards in depth, exploring the meaning contained in each card design. Her love of painting brings endless possibilities to her.Ann believes that the development of technology and the popularization of information have made the world more equal and brought more opportunities, but also more traps. In the flood of information, only by being true to the original self can we move forward steadily and firmly.

4. Be brave in pursuing dreams – improve herself and encourage others

For Ann, a young student who has just entered the professional art area, holding a personal exhibition is of far-reaching significance. Ann went all out to ensure the exhibition was a success. If pure artistic creation is a personal solo dance, then organizing an art exhibition is equivalent to being a director of a stage play. From selecting works, measuring and printing digital art, mounting paintings, preparing materials, contacting and coordinating galleries, arranging venue facilities, arranging event procedures, etc., it is all time-consuming and laborious detail work. She proved herself with a job wonderfully done.

She also said that her family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Ms. Liu, an established painter and excellent art teacher from the Vancouver Visual Art Studio. As a well-known senior artist, provided a lot of valuable experience in this exhibition, enabling Ann to achieve twice the result with half the effort. Everyone was amazed by this little girl's authentic and beautiful paintings, and the energy of youth displayed in them was impressive. This exhibition allowed Ann to achieve a transformational growth. She said she learned a lot during the preparation process. Firstly, she learned to have a vision of whole picture: when executing a comprehensive project, although we really want to be perfect in every detail, but one cannot let oneself get entangled when encountering problems, and one should think of ways to get the best results from the overall picture.

On the other hand, she said that she has become calmer when facing problems: she will definitely face various emergencies throughout the exhibition. Anticipating them and being mentally prepared is Ann’s secret skill. She learned that instead of panicking, it is better to analyze calmly and use practical methods to take action to solve the problem. In addition, the ability to communicate with others is vital. Preparing for an art exhibition requires communication and coordination among multiple parties, which is an excellent opportunity to improve one’s communication skills.

Ann also shared her experience with fellow students who love art, she said, firstly, you must lay a solid foundation step by step, and you have to be persist if you really like it, and get closer to your desired selves every day; on the other hand, you must actively explore and listen to other people’s stories, read more and appreciate the works of other artists, broaden your horizon, and learn through all kind of channels possible. More importantly, you have to be aware that art is not only the expression of personal emotions, it also has profound societal significance. Art reflects social phenomena, conveys values, and triggers deep thinking.Currently Ann is following her passion majoring in Communication Design in university. Looking forward to the future, she hopes to continue exploring in the field of interdisciplinary and cross-media art, create more outstanding works, set up her own studio, and write a shining new chapter in the field of painting art in a unique way.

To support community cultural endeavors, all proceeds from the solo exhibition ($4000) were donated to the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Yishu Initiative of Contemporary Chinese Art Society.

Introduction to the two pieces of her art works:

1. Skeleton: the work uses a variety of brilliant and saturated colors to create a strong contrast, symbolizing the blossoming of youth. Each small compartment contains human bones of different shapes, symbolizing youth and energy. Regardless of appearance, the bones reveal the essence of life and a sense of abundant power.

2. To Capture: a variety of small objects unique to the student era fly out of hand-painted book bags, bringing a strong sense of campus. The objects in the picture fly out in a light and agile way, exuding a positive and free atmosphere, symbolizing the exuberant vitality of pursuing dreams. The whole work conveys a positive spirit, inspiring people to pursue their dreams and move forward freely.
